If you’re investigating the best games that put you in the shoes of a detective, you don’t need to be a sleuth to find these games.

In the new game, the well-known detective Hercule Poirot won’t be the only protagonist, however. This time, we’ll also get to play as Jane Royce, an original character created for the game. She’s following the trail of a killer, going to various places, including London, Mallorca, New York and finally Egypt.

The story will alternate between the perspectives of both protagonists leading their respective investigations and, according to the developers, the game will go beyond a simple retelling of the original novel. The parallel stories of Poirot and Royce will ultimately converge and bring new layers to the mystery, which should add an element of surprise even for the hardcore fans of the Queen of Crime.

One thing to keep in mind besides the dual protagonist aspect is the point in time that the story takes place. While the original story was published in 1937, the game’s narrative was reimagined to instead take players to the 1970’s. This change promises to offer a colorful backdrop that affects the characters' clothes but also the rise of historical social movements.

It’s also interesting to note that the story will feature a new investigation that goes beyond the plot of Death on the Nile, with events and investigation elements that were not part of Agatha Christie’s mystery. Despite the changes and new additions, Microids promises that the story remains true to the original novel’s spirit. It’s possible to see a bit of the experience in the story trailer revealed back in June by the company:

Looking Out for Clues

Death on the Nile tells the story of a murder that happens inside a cruise ship on Egypt’s famous river. While the situation leads to the passengers being on edge, Hercule Poirot is luckily on board and can figure out the identity of the culprit with some hard detective work.

It’s up to players to investigate the areas, looking for clues and asking around to get testimonies from the colorful cast. As the investigation proceeds, it’ll be possible to create a detailed mindmap connecting the details and helping piece together the full picture.

After getting enough evidence, it’s possible to expose lies and reveal details that suspects would have wanted to keep hidden. Conversations will also lead to profiles of the characters, helping players understand better who they are and their secrets.

Despite the changes and new additions, Microids promises that the story remains true to the original novel’s spirit.
