Earlier this year,SlitherandSuperdirector James Gunn produced a “startling, subversive take on a radical new genre: superhero horror” with director David Yarovesky’s, you know, superhero horror movieBrightburn. And today we have word via producer James Gunn himself over on Instagram that talks have already begun for aBrightburn 2.
You see, what had happened was, a fan over on Instagram commented on a recent post by Gunn on the ending of Mad magazine and said that we definitely need a sequel toBrightburn, and the fan askedJames Gunnif he would be so kind as to direct it. Gunn replied with this.
“I think I’m tied up for the next few years with [The] Suicide Squad and Guardians [of the Galaxy Vol. 3], but we’re talking about the [Brightburn] sequel.”
Now truth be told, I have not seen thissuperhero horror movieyet so I cannot comment on whether or not I’d even like to see a sequel. But that said, from all the positive word-of-mouth surrounding the movie, I think I’m going to end up enjoying the hell out of it. So let’s just cut to the chase and say that the world needs a sequel toBrightburn. Bring it on!
For those of you out there that don’t know, the originalBrightburnasked the question, what if achild from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to humanity, he proved to be something far more sinister? Basically, this is another way of saying,Brightburnis a retelling of Zack Snyder’s take on Superman,Man of Steel- but mixed with the evil child subgenre of horror famous for flicks such asThe Omen,OrphanandThe Bad Seed.
The original movie was a significant hit so it makes sense that a sequel would be in the works. After all,Brightburnmanaged to snag a score of 57% over on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus which reads: “Although Brightburn doesn’t fully deliver on the pitch-black promise of its setup, it’s still enough to offer a diverting subversion of the superhero genre.” Not too shabby.
Box-office-wise the $6 million movie flew relatively high as well managing to snag a domestic total of $17.3 million and $14.0 million overseas for a worldwide total of $31.3 million. While those aren’t stellar numbers, remember as I just mentioned the movie only cost $6 million to produce. So that’s a solid return on investment.

James Gunn produced along with Kenneth Huang and the movie starred Elizabeth Banks, David Denman, Jackson A. Dunn, Matt Jones, and Meredith Hagner. The superhero horror movie featured music by Timothy Williams, cinematography by Michael Dallatorre, and it was all edited together by Andrew S. Eisen. Screen Gems, Stage 6 Films, Troll Court Entertainment, and The H Collective were the production companies behind the flick which Sony Pictures Releasing unleashed into a theater near you back on June 01, 2025.
