Pixelsalready gave us a taste of what aCentipedemovie could be, and featured in one of that movie’s biggest set pieces. Despite the movie being an out-and-out flop at the box office, Atari has decided it will move forward on a standaloneCentipedemovie, which they are partnering with Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films on. They are also planning a big screen adaptation of their other iconic video gameMissile Command, which is still a fan favorite amongst80s arcadeenthusiasts.

Atari is producing the movies alongsideRandall EmmettandGeorge Furla. The movie is being executive produced byStephen Belafonte,Wayne Marc GodfreyandRobert Jones. At this time, no plot details have been announced. And it’s not immediately clear how the movies will be adapted for the big screen.

BothCentipedeandMissile Commandwere popularshooter gamesreleased in the year 1980, and were two of the mostpopular video gamesin arcades at that time.Centipedenever had much of a backstory. It centered around a player who was forced to shoot down a giant encroaching centipede along with a variety of spiders, scorpions and fleas. InMissile Command, the player had to protect 6 California cities from an incoming missile attack.

While both games remain quite popular to this day, and will arrive in the theaters with a lot of brand recognition,Deadlinepoints out that it may be a bit challenging to script stories that have a creative narrative arc while keeping the highly explosive element of both games intact.
