The DCU news has been coming fast and furious recently.Supermandirector and DCU co-mastermindJames Gunnpraised Mike Flanagan’s script for the upcomingClayfacemovie, whileDaniel Craig unexpectedly leftSgt. Rock. However, there is a lot of speculation about what Gunn’s next directorial effort will be. During his and co-chief Peter Safran’s DC Studios Panel to update on all things DCU,Gunn gave a vague answer about this next project:
“I’m writing and directing something else that would be the next directing thing. It’s about… it’s connected.”
Given that answer, fans and others are speculating we could get a properWorld’s Finestmovie featuring Superman and Batman. And after the terribleBatman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, a Gunn directed Batman and Superman movie would be a great palette cleanser. For decades, DC Comics had Batman and Superman team-up comics under theWorld’s Finesttitle, with the most recent iteration debuting a couple of years ago.
A potential Superman and Batman movie would feature David Corenswet as Clark and a Batman yet-to-be-cast.But keep in mind, this is all speculation. However, Gunn confirmed that Robert Pattinson’s Batman will remain in the “Elseworlds” universe, separate from the DCU. The character was originally supposed to be revealed inThe Brave and The Bold, which will be directed by Andy Muschietti (It); however, that filmappears to be delayed, although Safran said “that story is coming along nicely.”
When Will the DCU Batman be Introduced?
With Gunn finally putting rumors to rest that Pattinson’s Batman would not show up in the DCU, when will the new Bruce Wayne arrive? WithThe Brave and the Bold’sscript still being worked on,the character could show up earlier as part of another film. Gunn said:
“I wouldn’t rule anything out.He could show up in something else. But the actor doesn’t exist [yet].”
James Gunn Confirms DCU Plans for an ‘Avengers’ Style Team-Up
The Co-Chairman of DC Studios has a plan to build up to an exciting ensemble down the line.
What’s more,Gunn and Safran confirmed that they aren’t adding a release date to any future DCU moviesbeforea script even exists, or at least a solid draft, which is something the MCU is known for. A great example of that is the greenlighting of theClayfacemovie, despite the fact that there were no plans for one.But Flanagan’s script was so good, they moved forward with the movie. Gunn explained the difficulties of developing a film that already has a release date yet without a screenplay:
“It is hard enough making a good movie with a good script. It’s almost impossible making a movie with a script that you’re writing on the run.”
Safran and Gunn also confirmed thatThe Batman: Part IIdirector Matt Reeves hasn’t turned in a full script, despiteproduction starting later this yearand an Aug 08, 2025 release date planned. And the co-Chairmen don’t want to confuse audiences as to which Batman is DCU canon and which is part of the Elseworlds Universe.Hence, why there hasn’t been much movement with regards to the DCU Batman. At least what they have revealed publicly.
Supermanis the first DCU movie, and it opens on August 04, 2025.
