E3 2020 Will Undergo Changes Including New Floor Plan, Industry-Only Day Plus More

In a report byGamedaily.bizabout next year’s E3, there are going to be a number of changes to the convention as pitch creates a large overhaul. One of those changes includes adding “experience hubs” which will feature celebrity appearances. One example GameDaily gave was the LA Lakers playing basketball games as well as a celebrity tournament.

According to the article the Entertainment Software Association are hoping to rebrand E3 into a “fan, media, and influencer festival”. They will also create “exclusive/appointment only activations for select attendees who will create buzz and FOMO”.

This sounds like they are trying to change the image of E3 and gain more eyes on the event. The ESA has approved 10,000 gamer badge attendees, meaning this brings up the total number of attendees on the show floor to 25,000. This increase in numbers also puts in motion a new industry-only day for the first day of E3 on Tuesday, with Wednesday and Thursday being open to ticket holders of the general public.

Compared to other gaming events this year,E3 2019saw only 66,000 entries and when you look atGamescom 2019which has 373,000 over the course of four days, that’s very different. E3 2019 also saw a few noticeable absences, one of the biggest beingSony, which was the first time in 24 years.

Biggest gaming exhibitions / trade shows of by number of entries:

Gamescom 2019: 373k

ChinaJoy 2019: 365k

Brazil Games Show 2018: 325k

Taipei Game Show 2019: 320k

Paris Games Week 2018: 316k

Tokyo Game Show 2019: 262k

G-Star Korea 2018: 235k

E3 2019: 66k

But this looks to be a pro-active way for E3 to grab more relevance, inviting celebrities and influencers, whether it works or not is another matter. These choices are more consumer based and don’t cater towards publishers.

E3 2020sets to return to the LA Convention Center from June 9th to 11th.
