Edge of Memories A Return to Classic JRPG Roots
In 2021, Midgar Studio surprised players withEdge of Eternity, a classic Japanese-styleRPG for PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC. Featuring an Active Time Battle combat system inspired by Final Fantasy and an open world, it blended traditional JRPG elements with modern touches like procedurally generated dungeon levels.
Now, four years later, Midgar Studio returns withEdge of Memories, an ambitious sequel featuring a star-studded development team.
What to Expect from Edge of Memories
Set in the world of Heyron,Edge of Memoriesfollows a land devastated by the Corrosion, leaving most survivors transformed into monstrous beings. Only one hero can change their fate—Eline, the game’s protagonist, embarks on a journey across Avaris to find a cure. Accompanying her are her two trusted allies: Ysoris, her mentor, and Kanta, a shaman from a lost tribe.
This new installment shifts to real-time combat, embracing fast-paced Action RPG mechanics with dynamic combos and devastating abilities. Allies play a crucial role in battles, offering customization options for both appearance and abilities. Additionally, players can unleash the Berserker transformation in dire situations, turning the tide of combat.
To ensure a smooth transition to this action-driven gameplay, Midgar Studio has brought in Mitsuru Yokoyama, the combat designer ofFinal Fantasy XV. Character designs come fromRaita Kazama, known for his work onXenoblade Chronicles, bringing a vibrant anime-inspired aesthetic to the game.
Powered byUnreal Engine 5, Edge of Memorieswill showcase a variety of colorful environments, from bustling port cities to snow-capped mountains.
A Story with No Filler, Backed by Legendary Music
Midgar Studio promises a meaningful narrative, ensuring that both main and side quests will contribute significantly to the story and character development.
The game’s soundtrack features a main theme composed by Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger), with additional contributions from Emi Evans, the iconic vocalist ofNieR: Automata.
Seemingly out of nowhere,Edge of Memorieshas joined the list of major 2025 releases. This fall is shaping up to be an exciting season for gamers, and this European-developed JRPG is now part of the lineup.
