Endless Dungeon, the tactical roguelite by Amplitude Studios, receives a May 2023 release date.
Endless Dungeon, an Action Tower Defense Roguelite Releases in May
Developers AMPLITUDE Studios (all caps intended) and publisher Sega have a new game coming in a few months. Endless Dungeon, the follow-up to the developer’s 2014 title Endless Dungeon, was just announced to release this May 14th, 2023.
Endless Dungeonis a follow-up to their previous title. However, instead of being a tower-defense style game with roguelite exploration elements, Endless Dungeon does it entirely opposite. Roguelite twin-stick shooting and exploration take center stage here, with a bit of defending on the side.
Endless Dungeon of the Endless
Endless Dungeon is a top-down action RPG that has players play either by themselves or in a group. Players can choose between one of four characters, which will increase to 5 in the full release (more on that later). The choices are between the massive robotic Bunker, the heavy weapons expert Zed, space cowboy Blaze, or even the plant-loving Shroom.
Each of the characters seems to have quite bubbly and varying personalities that are unique from one another. Some are brooding, others wacky, while others are quite stoic. Hopefully, we get to see a ton of banter between the group as they duke it out and try their best to survive.
Endless Dungeon’s characters also seem to be reminiscent of Overwatch, Valorant, or even Apex Legends since they are dedicated characters, and not just simple class archetypes.
Endless Space
The players' overall objective is to explore a derelict spaceship of massive proportions. We are lured here ultimately by the mere chance that plundering this vessel will lead to fame, riches, and more riches. Glory is optional. To be able to find all the secrets, however, the players must reach the vessel’s central core.
This core can only be fully opened by the heroes' crystal, carried by a mechanical companion. Thus it becomes the players' top priority to defend the crystal and its bearer with their lives. Without this, they will not be able to progress at all.
Various aliens and other space horrors will assault the player as they explore the craft. Methodically and carefully opening rooms will be the main gameplay loop. From there, you never know what might lurk behind, be it riches, respite, or danger.
The Final Rodeo
Version 1.0 of Endless Dungeon is being given the subtitle of the “Final Rodeo”. This will add a new boss, playable character, in-game event, and weapons.
The highlight of this could be the newest in-game hero, Comrade the Gunsmith. Comrade works well with firearms, and can even place down a turret without the need of a Turret Slot. His ultimate ability transforms the Gunsmith into the Smith Gun. He will essentially become a stationary turret himself and can deal tons of heavy damage that can potentially knock back his targets.
In terms of events, the Blackout will be introduced. Think of this likeDarktide’s “Lights Out” event wherein the areas get darker and darker. But instead of having the level permanently blanketed in darkness, Endless Dungeon will give players the opportunity to light up the place. Various terminals will be scattered around which will restore the power to the light systems.
Endless Dungeon’s Second Chance
As previously mentionedback in November 2022, the developers at Amplitude Studio held what they call the “Second Chance” OpenDev event. Essentially, this was a community event that had players test out the game as well as enjoy quite a substantial update.
In a bit of community camaraderie, the developers also unleashed a competitive “Wall of Fame” which tracked various actions done by the player community. Specific metrics such as “Most Monster Kills”, “Fewest Doors Opened”, and more, were tracked and displayed throughout the entire event. This was a nice and refreshing way for the most competitive of players to try and beat each others' scores.
Amplitude does intend to hold another OpenDev event sometime in the future. We can probably expect this sometime between now and the release of Endless Dungeon in May.
Endless Universe
Endless Dungeon will release on June 20, 2025. It will initially be available only digitally on PC, via Steam and Epic Games. A collector’s “Day One Edition” will also be available for hardcore fans of the Endless Universe. This will include a physical card game “Crystal Search”, an art book, as well as digital skins and the game’s soundtrack.
Amplitude Studios is primarily known for its games in the “Endless” universe. The Endless Space and Endless Legend games though are 4X high strategy games that are sci-fi and fantasy in theme, respectively. Dungeon of the Endless is a more strategic take, and a bit more comical.
