The Dreamscourge is a deadly disease in the world ofAvowedand the Living Lands, one that there’s no recovering from. Your mind goes to mush, and you become a mindless drone that has one goal: to kill. It’s not too dissimilar to the infected inThe Last ofUs, but some of the inhabitants want to find a cure, even if it seems hopeless.
Avowed: The Sinkhole Stroll Quest Guide
Into the depths of a giant sinkhole, help this research recover his research on… squirrels.
Accepting the Quest
That Which Remains’ story starts with a series of small interactions you normally wouldn’t expect. For starters, you will need to find a house in the middle of Shatterscarp. You should be able to spot the area with some soldering wreckage in the middle of the small, desolate village.
The locked cabin needs the Research House Key, which is located in the house opposite, which is unfortunately surrounded by Ash Blight. Take care of the blight and enter the house to find the key hanging next to the door and pick up the actual quest with the Ash-Tinged Note.
Into the Well
Head back to the house to find a legendary chest filled with upgrading material and the very important Well Key. Head outside and explore the desolate town a little more until you come across a locked well. Use the key on it to gain access to it.
You will encounter various spiderlings in the surprisingly spacious well until you hear some voices. Continue forward, and you’ll eventually come across a room with a cage filled full of Dreamscourge-infected NPCs. There is a locked door in this room with some more voices behind it.
Look up to the right of the cages, and you’ll see a lightly lit path that can be climbed and entered. Head on up and continue until you reach the other side of the barred door. Here you will meetTobin the optimist, Maegild the realist, and Fewen the pessimist.
Each one will give you their outlook on the matter. The people in the cage are those infected by the Dreamscourge and will likely never recover. They are experimenting to find a cure but have yet to find anything and the fate of both the survivors and the infected are in your hands.
Tobin wants to continue hope because one of the infected is his brother, asking you to go to Eagle’s Reach to get more provisions. Maegild wants you to go into the cage and put the infected down for their own sake, even if one of them is her husband. And Fewen just wants you to kill them as she doesn’t believe there’s any hope for them. So, obviously, you have three options to complete this quest.
Siding with Tobin
If you side with Tobin, you will have to travel back to the beginning of the map, where you entered, which is somewhat of a pain considering there’s not only no teleportation device near the entrance, but nor is there one near the survivors. Regardless, if you talk to Captain Wymgar, he will understand as he wants them to stay down in the well as the Steel Garrote would likely kill them. He will send more provisions to them and that will be the end of the side quest.
Siding with Maegild
If you side with Maegild, you will simply have to go into the other room, open the door and kill the infected. They are out of their mind, not fully turned, so they’re docile. One hit with any blade or wand will kill them, and they will not resist. Afterward, let the group know what you have done, and then you will have two options again. You can go talk to Captain Wymgar to get more provisions so they can continue to hide in the cave, or you can tell them to move to Eagle’s Reach. If you do the latter, Captain Wymgar will be upset as he believes the Garrote will catch wind of this, and then he will have to feel their wrath.
Siding with Fewen
This is a quick end to the quest, as, if you decide to give in and attack Fewen, for some reason that wraps things up. The others will not talk to you and there will be no mention of the survivors with Captain Wymgar. The others don’t want to die, so you can’t kill them, but Fewen is free game. Regardless, this would be considered the bad ending to the quest.
If you’re wondering the level 9 Resolve check skips all the options and just sends the group to Eagle’s Reach immediately.
