When looking for a weapon to use inMonster Hunter Wilds, you’ll have plenty of options available. One of the strongest weapons in the series is the Long Sword, which is easy to learn but hard to master. Utilizing Spirit Gauge Attacks
The Long Sword’s best way to output maximum damage is with the Spirit Gauge.
The Spirit Gauge is a resource for these special moves when using the Long Sword. This has 4 stages: normal, white, yellow, and red. These stages will increase your damage output with each level of the weapon, and certain moves will reduce levels to deal large attacks. However, at the red level, you will be able to use Crimson Attacks. These attacks are upgraded versions of your Normal Attacks that chain together easily, deal more damage, and automatically activate while at the red level of the gauge. Unlike the other gauge levels, the red level will drain over time, giving you access to powerful moves for this brief period and allowing you to use multiple Spirit Gauge levels for a lower overall cost.
The Spirit Gauge will fill up with normal and thrust attacks and can be leveled up with two moves;Spirit SlashandSpirit Charge. Spirit Slash is an attack that will chain together when pressing the corresponding button repeatedly. For example, R2 on PlayStation 5 can be used until you have a powerful finisher move that will level up your gauge. Spirit Charge is bound to the same button as Spirit Slash and can be activated after using most moves. To activate it you just have to hold the button and wait untilSpirit Roundslashis available. Once your character has fully charged the move, you can release the button, and when it connects with the monster you’ll have a full gauge level activated.
Spirit Thrust is a flashy and powerful move that can be used for two extra attacks once you’ve leveled up your gauge. This attack will combo intoSpirit Helm Breakerand after using Spirit Thrust your hunter will throw themself at the monster. When your Spirit Gauge is leveled up past the normal level, you can perform a powerful follow-up attack. By pressing the same inputs once again you will do a downward plunge attack on the monster, consuming a level of your gauge for some extra damage. After Spirit Helm Breaker has been used, you can press the Spirit Slash button for another follow-up attack, Spirit Release Slash. Try to use this combination of moves at the end of your red gauge timer. This will ensure that you’ve used as many attacks as possible before draining it completely with these attacks.

Know When to Use Counter-Attack Moves
The weapon isn’t solely offensive, there are several defensive moves to utilize as well.
Veterans of Monster Hunter will know how the Long Sword is a very capable weapon in the hands of a player who can read a monster’s moves and knows what is about to happen. When using the Long Sword, you’ve got two options for defensive attacks to stay out of harm’s way while you unleash your attacks on them. The key to this weapon is to be as aggressive as possible and make the most of your Spirit Gauge bonus damage as well as its moves.
The first defense attack option is the easiest way to avoid a monster attack, and it’s the attack named Foresight Slash. This move has invincible frames that activate upon use and will have your hunter dodge backwards while attacking. When done correctly, you will flash blue, avoid damage, and follow up with aSpirit Slashattack to damage the monster. This attack is tight on timing and can be done at will without having to attack first, like the second option. The downside is thatForesight Slashcan put you in danger if you don’t have room to dodge backwards. With certain monster area-of-effect attacks, you’re able to also end up in even more damage due to the dodge putting you into these attacks. The ease of use doesn’t mean it will be useful 100% of the time, but knowing when to use it will ensure you stay safe while hunting.
Your second option to keep yourself safe is theIai Spirit Slashattack. This attack can only be activated after usingSpecial Sheathe, which can also only be active after using any other attack at least once. Once Special Sheathe is active, you’re able to use Iai Spirit Slash to cut your way forward towards the monster, avoiding any damage if the monster attack hits as you activate Iai Spirit Slash. This attack requires you to be able to read an upcoming attack in advance and time it with the sheath animation. It’s a high-risk move that doesn’t do a ton of damage, but it does keep you safe when you get the hang of using it properly.
The Long Sword is a solid tried-and-true weapon in the Monster Hunter series that enables players to be as aggressive as possible. It will enable players to focus on dealing the maximum amount of damage while still having some options to stay safe while in danger. Make sure your Spirit Gauge is always being charged with either Spirit Slash or Spirit Charge to keep the red charge level active as often as possible. The weapon is easy to learn with a lot of potential for you to create combos and evolve as a Long Sword user the longer you use the weapon.
