Guillermo del Torois known for creating some ofthe best and unique works of dark fantasywe’ve ever seen, and he’s at it again with a newNetflixseries that’s based on a collection of “little stories” he wrote with author Chuck Hogan. Known asThe Boy in the Iron Box, there are six novellas in total in the saga, which were published through Amazon’s Original Stories initiative last year, and have now been optioned by Netflix.

Per What’s on Netflix, the streaming giant is hoping to bring del Toro and Hogan’s work to life, as the duo have found success with other shows such as FX’sThe Strain, which was based on a series of books they previously collaborated on. Everything is still in the very early stages of development, so no promises are being made at this point, but we do know thatThe Boy in the Iron Boxwill be produced by del Toro’s Necropia Entertainment. If you’ve never read the books, here’s a brief synopsis of what they’re about:

Guillermo del Toro Calls This Classic Hitchcock Thriller “The Most Perfect Action Film Ever Made”

The Oscar-winning director says the film perfectly blends “comedy, drama, action, and suspense.”

“Flying dark, a plane carrying a team of mercenaries crash-lands on a remote snowy summit. When they come across a maze-like stone fortress, it’s no refuge from the wolves and the freezing wind. It’s more like a trap. What they discover can stop the heart—or worse. As terror takes a new shape, the real battle for survival begins.”

Netflix and del Toro Are No Strangers to One Another

Netflix and del Toro are like peanut butter and jelly at this point, as the two have collaborated on a number of projects over the years. There wasTrollhunters: Tales of Arcadiain 2016 that lasted for three seasons, 2021’sScary Stories to Tell in the Dark,Cabinet of Curiositiesin 2022, and more recently, the stop-motion animation filmPinocchio, which took home the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.

They’re hooking up yet again forthis year’s version of del Toro’sFrankenstein, which is set to release in November. Starring Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, and Christopher Waltz, the film looks to put a fresh spin on a classic tale:

“Set in Eastern Europe in the 19th Century, this is the story of Dr. Pretorious (Waltz), who needs to track down Frankenstein’s Monster (Elordi)—believed to have died in a fire 40 years before—to continue the experiments of Dr. Victor Frankenstein (Isaac).”

When it comes toThe Boy in the Iron Box, there’s no telling right now if it will be a live-action series, or an animated one, as del Toro likes to play in different mediums. One thing’s for sure, though, and that’s no matter what he comes up with, we’re positive it’ll be a visually stunning masterpiece that’s filled with countless wonders that skew the line between horrific and sublime.
