Xbox has not only become the number one publisher in the industry but has gradually transitioned several of its licenses to the big and small screens.

However, the results have been mixed. While Fallout received excellent reviews and has a promising future ahead, the Halo series did not convince audiences and was canceled after just two seasons.

“We are improving in this process, and because of that, we feel confident to go further,” Spencer stated in remarks to Variety.

He also reflected on the results so far with their last two television adaptations: “We’ve learned from making Halo, and also from the Fallout series.” In this sense, Spencer is aware that there is still much to learn and even anticipates possible failures: “Obviously, we will have a couple of adaptations that won’t hit the mark.”

The executive seems to be aware of the bad luck of other video game films, a “jinx” that could extend to the Minecraft movie, which has not been without controversy.

The Challenges of the Minecraft Movie

In fact, the road to theMinecraftfilm has been complex: since the project was initiated a decade ago, it has gone through several directors and rewrites.

Regarding its unique title, producer Mary Parent explains that, being a sandbox, Minecraft has room for countless stories, including that of this movie.

What Spencer is certain about is that there will be new adaptations of Xbox games: “You’re going to see more; it’s a learning process through which we gain autonomy and confidence with each new adaptation.”

A Competitive Landscape for Video Game Adaptations

Creating successful series and films not only brings prestige and new revenue streams but also boosts game sales, as evidenced by the Fallout series on Prime Video, which significantly increased the numbers of previous installments.

However, Spencer will face competition. In addition to the unstoppable series of The Last of Us, we will also see adaptations ofMass Effect, God of War, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and many other licenses in the future.
