Call of DutyZombies was stealthily released as a post-credit bonus after you finish the Call of Duty: World at War campaign. The first ever Zombies map, Nacht der Untoten, sees you holding out for as long as possible in a fort of rubble, as waves of undead foes force their way through boarded-up windows in their relentless assault.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Zombies: How to Trigger the Meteor Shower Easter Egg
How to make a meteor hit the earth (and drop its loot) on Terminus!
In the years since World at War, the mode has exploded in scale, popularity, and complexity. That growth has also brought with it an impressive array of maps, each with its own unique traits. To celebrate this, let’s take a look at the maps that are the very best of the bunch, based on their theme, Easter eggs, and unique wonder weapons.
10Terminus - Call Of Duty: Black Ops 6
A Nightmarish Island Offering Great Gameplay Variety
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is the next entry in Activision’s FPS franchise, and it is expected to launch in 2024.
Terminus is the more complicated ofCall of Duty: Black Ops 6’s two launch zombie maps. It traps you on an island during a jailbreak that goes horribly awry, revealing the island’s dark history or volatile scientific research along the way. The atmosphere is wonderfully creepy and filled with small dsturbing elements to find, ranging from the usual gore to strange body horror images of experiments gone wrong.
Where Terminus shines is in its easter eggs. There are a wide range of easter eggs on the map that range from funny moments like a boat-racing minigame to the double-action beamsmasher wonder weapon and the sprawlingmain quest easter egg.The various activities give you plenty to do every time you jump into the map, and it takes full advantage of the new mechanics and features introduced in Black Ops 6.
9Gorod Krovi - Call Of Duty: Black Ops 3
Dragons Make Everything Better
Call of Duty: Black Ops III
Gorod Krovi is easily identified as the Call of Duty Zombies map with the dragons. Set in an alternate universe Stalingrad, Gorod Krovi blends science fiction, fantasy, and horror to create an iconic experience. On top of its incredible atmosphere, Gorod Krovi also offers some fun new equipment like a wieldable pet dragon and an upgraded zombie shield that can breathe fire while protecting you from the fire from dragons.
What prevents Gorod Krovi from ranking higher on this list is its difficulty. The map has a lot of mechanics and easter eggs to keep track of, even if you aren’t going for the challenging lengthy main quest easter egg.The playable space of the map is also very limited thanks to how tight and winding most of it is, making it easy to get trapped or suddenly killed by a little thing that you missed. So, it isn’t a very good map to jump into if you’re looking for a more casual or relaxed round of zombies.
A Star-Studded Cast Brings New Ideas
Call of Duty: Black Ops
Call of the Dead brings a lot of unique elements to the table, with the ones that work outweighing those that serve to hamper the experience. The map comes with a star-studded cast that sees you playing as the likes of Sarah Michelle Gellar, Robert Englund, Danny Trejo, and Michael Rooker while constantly being pursued by a powerful zombified George Romero. The cast brings a lot of fun to the map and Romero constantly following after the players brings a lot of tension. On top of the cast, the map is large with a unique snowy theme and gives you access to every perk in the game to make optimal builds.
Where Call of the Dead struggles is in the environmental hazards around the map. The map is covered in cold water that can annoyingly freeze you while featuring a more linear structure that can restrict your playstyle. The map’s weapons are also disappointing, with the wonder weapon V-R11 not being powerful enough to be worth chasing and the Scavenger, an explosive sniper, sometimes being more frustrating than it is fun.
7Zombies In Spaceland - Call Of Duty: Infinite Warfare
An Eighties Theme Spices Up Tried And True Mechanics
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
The only map on this list not developed by Treyarch,Zombies in Spaceland is a wonderful map boosted by a novel concept, a comedic tone, and tons of fun content. Most of the bones of Treyarch’s maps are present here, but with the fun twist of playing as aspiring actors sucked into an eighties horror flick. The theme brings with it some really fun concepts, like an in-game arcade, clever references, and a hidden David Hasselhoff.
Best Order to Play the Last 10 Call of Duty Games So Far
Looking to do a marathon of the 10 recent Call of Duty games? Here’s a chronological timeline for the best order to play them in.
What holds Zombies in Spaceland back is its lackluster main quest easter egg and lack of interesting weapons for players to equip. There is a main quest to puzzle through, but it recycles a lot of objectives and puzzles from Treyarch’s maps and doesn’t do enough in the end to be worthwhile.
6Kino Der Toten - Call Of Duty: Black Ops
A Classic That Stands The Test Of Time
Kino Der Toten was the fifth map ever added to Zombies and was where the mode found its stride. It combines the fun simplicity of the mode’s earlier maps with some of the more advanced mechanics that were introduced later. It includes various perk machines, anunlockable Pack-A-Punch machine (still a Zombies icon in Black Ops 6), and more zombie types.
The mix of simple and complex makes it one of the best casual maps to jump on, even if you don’t have nostalgia for it. However, going back to it can make it feel rather feel dated, and it isn’t as replayable as more modern maps that have layers of content to go through during each playthrough.
5Mauer Der Toten - Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
A Beautiful Mix Of The Old And The New
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
Mauer Der Toten was Treyarch’s return to a round-based structure inCall of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Set at a crossing point of the Berlin Wall, the map brought a lot of new ideas and mechanics to the mode that helped it stand out from all its peers.
A real standout of Mauer Der Toten is Klaus, a robot companion that you can build and play around throughout the map, giving it a unique and fun play style. This, combined with the customizable wonder weapon and fun side activities, makes it worth playing even for those who don’t like the potentially more controversial additions to Black Ops Cold War, such as body armor.
4Der Eisendrache - Call Of Duty: Black Ops 3
A Secluded Castle With Magical Weapons
Der Eisendrache marks the beginning of the upper echelons of this list, the very finest maps in Call of Duty Zombies history. Set in a mountain castle,Der Eisendrache is a balanced mix of tight corridors filled with tense encounters and more wide-open areas to survive the hordes in higher rounds.Add in a really fun main quest easter egg and four elemental bow wonder weapons and it is always a great time.
All Weapons in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
Rocket launchers, assault rifles, pistols, sniper rifles, and more await you in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.
The two factors that hold the map back a little bit are its atmosphere and characters. The snowy castle has some interesting areas, but the map does end up feeling repetitive, as most of it consists of just dark bricks. Meanwhile, though it stars the classic Primis cast of characters, they don’t have any particularly unique moments or interactions to help the map stand out.
3Shadows Of Evil - Call Of Duty: Black Ops 3
Shadows of Evil showcases the thematic potential of Call of Duty Zombies. A launch map forCall of Duty: Black Ops 3, Shadows of Evil is set in the Lovecraftian 1940s city called Morg City. Its neon-filled streets and cast of guest actors set a unique mood perfectly.
Along with the theme,Shadows of Evil has a great main quest easter egg filled with unique challenges, surprising set pieces, and exclusive gear.Unfortunately, the map’s easter egg can only be completed with a coordinated squad of players, making it inaccessible for players without a group of friends to play with. Though this will limit its appeal for some, it doesn’t keep the map from being one of the greats.
2Origins - Call Of Duty: Black Ops 2
Frozen Trenches With Tons To Do
Origins was the last Zombies map released for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, and ended things with a bang. It is a massive map set in the trenches of the First World War but with magical staves and giant robots stomping around for good measure.
What makes Origins stand out from its peers is just how much content it offers players. There is a staggering amount of equipment to build, small easter eggs to complete, and gear to upgrade throughout a playthrough. When it was first released, it was really the first map of its kind, but even with newer maps following in its wake and taking up that mantle, it still holds something special.
An Impossible Prison Escape
Mob of the Dead sees you attempting to escape from the legendary prison Alcatraz. While not quite as sprawling or complex as Origins, it more than makes up for it with the incredible quality of all its content.
Mob of the Dead features a great cast of endearing guest characters, an extremely unique main quest easter egg, unique mechanics, fantastic details scattered throughout the map, and tons of fun and powerful weapons to find and build. An easter egg conclusion that makes ita great multiplayer experienceis the cherry on top, and all told, it is no surprise that it is the best Call of Duty Zombies map yet.
