During the course of the first section inResident Evil Village: Shadows of Rose, you’ll eventually unlock the door at the top of the staircase in the Dimitrescu castle — beyond lies the gallery and a puzzle. Once you get into the gallery, you’ll be greeted with six portraits, one of which is missing. If you don’t have the sixth one, you may’t solve this puzzle just yet. However, if you’ve found the final one in the castle’s lower levels, you’re ready to open the blocked-off chest. The clue makes it pretty clear as to what your goal is.

There are three portrait frames on both sides of the room. One side has predators and the other side has their prey. You simply need to line them up properly and the chest will open, allow you to claim its prize.

If you’d like to know where to put what, you may consult the images below, which show you exactly where you’re meant to place each painting. In case you want to reason it out, I’ll explain. On one side, you’ll need to place the wolf, the snake, and the spider. They need to be staring down their respective prey. Wolves eat other mammals, so place the sheep across from the wolf. Snakes, on the other hand, eat frogs, so you’ll place the frog across from the snake. Finally, spiders eat butterflies, so put that one where it goes. The treasure chest will then open.

This is a fairly simple puzzle that doesn’t leave much to the imagination, unless you’re just not familiar with what animals are eaten by other animals. It’s certainly not on the tougher end of what we’ve come to expect fromResident Evil, but it does require a bit of thought, so it’s not like you just shoot something out of a tree and then sell it to a swashbuckling shop owner. But I honestly prefer that. Who doesn’t love finding spinels in trees?
