The Death Stranding Movie — A Challenging Adaptation
Adapting such a unique video game asDeath Strandingis no easy task. Loved by some and disliked by others, the title fromKojima Productions(led byHideo Kojima) was a true phenomenon that left no one indifferent when it launched back in November 2019 for PS4.
We’re talking about over 19 million copies sold, a sequel already in development (set to release in June 2025), and an undeniable cultural value that could translate well into a theatrical film.
In December 2022,Hideo Kojimaconfirmed thatDeath Strandingwould be adapted into a film, helmed by A24, the acclaimed production company founded in 2012 by Daniel Katz, David Fenkel, and John Hodges.
In fact,Death Strandingwill be their fourth upcoming film, with the next one beingThe Death of Robin Hood, a dark reimagining of the classic tale starringHugh Jackman, Jodie Comer, and Bill Skarsgård.
Who is Michael Sarnoski?
According to Deadline, Sarnoski will write and directDeath StrandingalongsideHideo Kojima(and his Kojima Productions team), Square Peg, andA24. It’s a major challenge, especially considering it will be only his fourth film.
The American filmmaker rose to prominence in 2021 with the release ofPig, a unique thriller starring Nicolas Cage as a truffle hunter desperately searching for his beloved pig.
Three years later, in 2024, he was chosen to directA Quiet Place: Day One, a prequel to John Krasinski’s horror saga. Now, he’ll move from horror to dystopian science fiction.
It’s unknown whether any of the video game’s cast members will appear in the film, but the talent pool is impressive:Norman Reedus, Léa Seydoux, Margaret Qualley, Mads Mikkelsen, Troy Baker.
Not much is known yet about theDeath Strandingfilm adaptation, though it appears to be set for release in 2026, a few months after the launch ofDeath Stranding 2: On the Beach, which arrives June 26, exclusively on PS5.
Another video game adaptation arriving soon is season two ofThe Last of Us, premiering August 17, 2025, on Max. In 2026, the sequel toThe Super Mario Bros. Moviewill debut, and 2027 will bringThe Legend of Zelda movie.
