After keeping MCU fans waiting for a remarkably long time, the exciting first trailer for Taika Waititi’sThor: Love and Thunderwas finally released on July 29, 2025. The trailer was a drink of fresh water for fans who had been eagerly looking forward to their first glimpse into a movie that promises to be one of the biggest hits of 2022. The film was first announced in 2019 and scheduled to be released in 2021 but was pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Having given fans their first taste ofThor: Love and Thunderthree long years ago, it is no surprise that fans have dissected the much-awaited trailer piece by piece and come up with their own guesses and assumptions.TheLove and Thundertrailer spans approximately 90 seconds and is jam-packed with information. The overall tone of the trailer, progressing to the Guns N’ Roses classic “Sweet Child O’ Mine,“posits the movie as one filled with action, cosmic adventure, and a healthy dose of humor. Receptions to the trailer have ranged from questions about the absence of Gorr the God Butcher to squeals of excitement over the possible LGBTQ+ representation in the movie.

Where is Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher?

Theuncharacteristically detailed film synopsisestablished that Thor’s retirement would be interrupted by a supervillain known as Gorr the God Butcher, played by Christian Bale. The outline makes it seem as if the plot ofThor: Love and Thunderwill be primarily centered on Thor’s mission to stop Gorr, who is determined to eliminate all gods in existence. However, quite surprisingly, Gorr the God Butcher does not make a single appearance in the 90-second trailer despite the primary space that is afforded to him in the official synopsis.

Fans have thus concluded that the trailer only shows a part of the story and leaves perhaps some of the most exciting details until the film’s actual release. This is not uncharacteristic of Marvel with their preference to keep some of the biggest punches under wraps for as long as possible.

LGBTQ+ Representation

One of the most picked on moments in the newly released trailer occurs when Star-Lord Peter Quill, played by Chris Pratt, advises the God of Thunder to “just look into the eyes of the people that you love” whenever he feels lost. As Quill gazes off, Thor moves his head into Quill’s line of sight in a seeming hope that the romantic words are directed at him.

Fans, interpreting the scene as possible queer representation, took to Twitter to voice their opinions. Twitter user@starforcebinaryreferring not only to Thor and Quill but also to Thor’s ex-girlfriend Jane Foster and Valkyrie, wrote,

When Taika said Thor Love and Thunder is a love story he didn’t mean ThorJane he meant ThorQuill and JaneValkyrie

However, some fans were not impressed with this read of the trailer and argued that the trailer was being overanalyzed by viewers. User@closephine_wrote:

seeing people call the brief eye contact thor and peter make in the love and thunder trailer queerbait makes me feel insane. we gotta get you guys some real gay people

@TheEsseHolmesresponding to a tweet regarding gay representation inThor: Love and Thunder, said,

There’s platonic love, I love some of my friends, but I’m not in love with them, you’re probably reading too far into it

Yes to Powerful Women

The presence ofNatalie Portman’s Jane Foster as The Mighty Thorand Tessa Thomspon’s Valkyrie as the ruler of New Asgard also fed fan excitement regarding the portrayal of powerful women in the film. With superhero films traditionally hinging on men in suits, fans of the MCU were understandably excited to see women in suits, both business and superheroine, in the newThor: Love and Thunder.

Twitter user @lovedagger commented on the possible reaction of “marvel dudebros” at the portrayal of powerful women in the trailer for the movie, while another user applauded the portrayal of Valkyrie.User @mxhaesuscalled her “King Valkyrie,” saying:

king valkyrie and mighty thor. women. ugh i love them

Yearning for Loki

Although Loki does not appear in the trailer, nor is any hint of his presence in the movie given, fans have refused to give up hope on a Loki appearance. Although Loki died at the hands of Thanos inInfinity War, he was brought into the MCU once again as a new “variant.” Therefore, fans haven’t given up hope that he might make an appearance inThor: Love and Thunder.

However, it is quite unlikely that Loki will appear inThor: Love and Thunder.Expressing his stance on Loki’s presencein the movie, Tom Hiddleston said:

“We talked about the Thor movies as a family saga, and the diametric opposition between Thor and Loki and duality and antagonism being a book that perhaps should remain closed for the moment. We have explored about as much as we can about these two brothers.”

Have Characters Been Scrubbed Out?

Eagle-eyed fans have also noticed that characters may have been scrubbed out in a shot that focuses on Thor and Korg. Fans have pointed out that the framing of the scene appears to be off-center, and some have suggested that the extra space in the frame is the result of Marvel digitally scrubbing out a character from the trailer.

Since Marvel has a history of editing out certain parts from their trailers to keep the suspense, as was done inSpider-Man: No Way Homewith Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire, it is entirely plausible that characters have been removed from theThor: Love and Thundertrailer. Fans have speculated that the mystery character may be Lady Sif, Loki, or someone entirely new. A consensus regarding the mystery character has not been reached.
